About Deep Water Culture (DWC) System

Deep water culture, or DWC, is one of four major hydroponics systems that deliver liquid nutrients to plants. This type of system is often used in decorative hydroponics systems in homes, with decorative leafy plants surrounding a wooden frame. This type of system is also known as raft, pond, or float. The plants’ roots are basically suspended within a liquid solution of water that contains oxygen and hydroponics nutrients.

DWC systems are inexpensive to set up and are favoured by home growers. One benefit of this type of system is that growth can be encouraged vertically, rather than the usual horizontal system. The plants’ roots are suspended within a small pond of water, or have several plants within smaller containers. The containers have a depth of liquid that’s about 20 to 30 cm deep. This needs to be regularly maintained, with the DWC system being fun and simple for most hobbyists to look after.

Each container or reservoir is filled with water and nutrients which are pH-balanced, and which are kept at the optimum temperature for the plants being grown. This type of system encourages faster growth, and is also a neat and tidy way to have decorative plants in the home or in the lobby of a business.

The deep water culture (DWC) hydroponics system begins with a net pot or what is a plastic pot with netting so that the roots can grow through to the surface. Rockwood or hydroton is poured in which holds the base of the plants in place. In some setups you may not even need a net pot. Then a layer of airstone is added to provide oxygenation to the plants.

Frequent monitoring much be done to ensure the pH of the nutrients are kept at the optimum level. You can purchase hydroponics kits to help make the shopping process much easier, particularly if you’re a beginner. If you’re doing commercial deep water culture (DWC) hydroponics, we also have all the equipment you need, but are also here if you need help.
