About Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain) System
Ebb and flow hydroponic systems are just one of four major types used to grow plants indoors. It’s also known as ebb flood and flood drain, and suitable for your hobby garden or for a commercial enterprise. Your plants will be provided with adequate drainage as water movement and delivering of nutrients is provided to all plants. The ebb part of it is in reference to when the water drains away, while the flow is when the water comes back in again, much like how tides work on a beach.
Ebb and flow hydroponic systems are some of the most popular to use for indoor gardening due to its simplicity, low cost, and reliability. An ebb and flow system starts with an inert medium which helps to anchor the roots inside the container. The grow medium can be lava rock, rock wool cubes, fibres, coconut coir, rice husks, and more. Growing medium can also be mixed in. Then the water and nutrients are added. This type of system will also need to be tested on a regular basis to ensure that the plants are receiving all the nutrients required.
The hydroponic solution can flood the system and then is allowed to flow away before flowing back in again through the use of a pumping system. There is a reservoir where the fluid is kept before flooding back into the plants. Gravity is also utilized to help the solution drain back to the plants.
Ebb and flow hydroponic systems are a horizontal type of growing system where the pots are placed on a table. They may be enclosed within a grow tent or left out. All types of plants can be efficiently grown in this type of system. This type of ebb and flow hydroponic system is flexible. This type of system may not be efficient for large commercial enterprises as other types of hydroponics systems may be better.
